After 19 seasons, the American medical series loses Grey’s Anatomy her protagonist. Ellen Pompeo is stepping down as Meredith Gray after more than 15 years. This should be the beginning of the end of the series.
Her role was the title role, series creator Shonda Rhimes tied the continuation of Grey’s Anatomy long wondered how much longer Ellen Pompeo wanted to play. And she wanted that for a long time. Until now. “I am eternally grateful and humbled by the love and support you have shown me, Meredith Grey, and the show over 19 seasons. None of this would have been possible without the best fans in the world,” Pompeo shared on Instagram.
Also Shonda Rhimes – meanwhile with productions like Bridgerton doing well at Netflix – was saddened by Pompeo’s departure on Instagram. “What a wild ride these last 19 seasons have been. None of this would have been possible without the incomparable Ellen Pompeo, the only Meredith Grey,” she wrote.
Pompeo has been around since the first season in 2005 and has always been the linchpin of Grey’s Anatomy. Meredith Gray lived through everything a human being can go through as a doctor in a Seattle hospital, first as an intern, later as chief surgeon. She had a mother with dementia, her hand on a bomb, nearly drowned, survived an assassination attempt, a plane crash, her husband died in a car crash, after all she barely survived Covid. More and more drama for Meredith Gray was the principle of the series. But also that she kept going. A significant turning point came when her series beau Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) left the show in 2015. After all, the romance between the two lasted for eleven seasons and more than ten years.
“Grey’s Anatomy” held up well for a few seasons, the series got new main characters and dealt with relevant topics such as racism or sexual violence. But then the series went downhill. The plot repeated itself, the characters seemed to have been told. In season 17, the show even brought back several already deceased characters (they appear in Meredith Gray in the Covid fog). All this, combined with the constant speculation about the end of the series, was like saying goodbye in installments.
The 19th season is currently running in the USA with a new young cast whose roles are very similar to those of the original Meredith Gray characters from 2005. Everything again, only with new actors? In any case, Pompeo will only be seen in eight of the approximately 20 episodes, her character is leaving Seattle for a new position in Boston. How things will continue without her is questionable. But even her personal farewell is apparently one in installments. Pompeo also wrote, “The show must go on and I’ll definitely be back for a visit.” Grey’s Anatomy – the young doctors can be seen in Germany on ProSieben, Sixx and Joyn, among others.
