Electro in Munich: DJ Gabrielle Kwarteng hangs up at Harry Klein – Munich

Flowing transitions, effortless genre changes that sound natural and at the same time surprising are among the specialties of DJ Gabrielle Kwarteng. The fact that the New Yorker was inspired by the numerous musical influences of her hometown and has since been on a constant search for sounds through styles, epochs and countries can be heard in her diverse setlists.

According to her own statements, her focus is on “Black American genres”, which include house, disco and techno. She chooses pieces from different decades, mixes different sound elements, sometimes instrumental, sometimes with vocals – numerous varieties of electronic dance music from different parts of the world merge into musical trips whose twists and turns seem unexpected but absolutely necessary. You lose yourself in house rhythms while listening, until pounding percussions and jagged disco beats in combination with chants break up the trance-like listening experience, but don’t destroy it.

The fact that everything meshes so smoothly and skilfully is due to Kwarteng’s talent and many years of experience. She already collected the latter in New York and during her student days: as a DJ at parties and events and as a radio presenter. The daughter of Ghanaian parents has been living in Berlin, home of the legendary Berghain, for some time. DJing there is considered the reference in the field of electronic dance music, and Kwarteng played a few DJ sets at Berghain. In addition to clubs, she also DJs at festivals such as Glastonbury and Melt.

Her guest article in the American magazine showed that she also has talent as an author Vogue from the year 2020, in which the “Black Lives Matter” movement initiated important social debates. “Why I Don’t Refer to My Hair as ‘Dreadlocks'” is the title of her article worth reading. On Friday, this exciting DJ will play alongside other colleagues at Harry Klein.
