Successful TV producer Karl Spiehs is dead. He reportedly passed away at the age of 90.

One of the most successful Austrian film and series producers is dead. Karl Spiehs, who, among other things, launched the cult series “Ein Schloss am Wörthersee”, died at the age of 90. He reports that “Courier”, who is said to have found out about the news from Spieh’s “close vicinity”.

Spiehs can boast over 300 TV and film productions. Most of them were comedies, including films like “Die Supernasen” and “Zwei Supernasen tanken Super” with Thomas Gottschalk (71) and Mike Krüger (70). Only rarely did he dare to take on more serious subjects such as “Everybody dies for himself” with Hildegard Knef (1925-2002).

Popular critic scare

With “Ein Schloß am Wörthersee”, which was produced for RTL in 1990, Spiehs helped pop singer and actor Roy Black (1943-1991) make a comeback. He played Lennie Berger in the first two of three seasons before Uschi Glas (77) took over the lead role in the third season.

Spiehs has received several awards for his work. In 2015 he received the platinum Romy for life’s work, followed in 2018 by the Grand Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria. In a laudatory speech, Thomas Gottschalk once honored him with the words: “He made the critics cry and the audience laugh.”
