Eight dead, one injured after knife attack

Eight people died after a knife attack in central China, Chinese media reported this Friday, citing local authorities. Another victim was injured, but his life is not in danger, according to the official China New agency. The attack occurred Thursday morning in the city of Xiaogan, in Hubei province, according to state television CCTV.

The suspect, a 53-year-old man, was arrested by police, according to CCTV. In the past, he had been treated for mental problems, according to the same source, who specified that an investigation had been opened.

A growing phenomenon

Shootings are extremely rare in China, where citizens cannot own firearms. But there have been numerous stabbing attacks in recent years. On Monday, a knife-wielding woman killed two people and injured four others at a primary school in the central province of Jiangxi.

In early May, a stabbing attack left two people dead and 21 injured in a hospital in Yunnan province, in the southwest.

In August 2023 in the same province, two people died and seven others were injured in a knife attack carried out by a man with a history of mental disorders, just like the perpetrator of Thursday’s attack.
