When the wakeboarders glide spectacularly several meters high through the air in the water ski park, they have a good view of the currently undeveloped, huge area on which one of the most ambitious projects in the district will be realized in the coming years: south of the Sankt-Emmeram-Realschule A school campus will be built on around 35,000 square meters by the beginning of the school year 2025/26 with the extension of the secondary school, the construction of a high school, a triple gymnasium, a teaching swimming pool, two sports fields as well as an administration building and a caretaker’s apartment. The total volume of the gigantic project amounts to almost 130 million euros.
“This is a very sporty investment program, but it is also due to the forecast number of schoolchildren,” said Kirchheim’s mayor Maximilian Böltl (CSU) when presenting the project to the school association for state secondary schools in the east of the district, which includes the districts of Aschheim, Kirchheim and Feldkirchen are represented and whose chairman is Böltl. The core of the project is the construction of the grammar school, it will be the 16th state grammar school in the Munich district with its 360,000 inhabitants; In addition, two further high schools in Sauerlach and Putzbrunn have been approved. For comparison: In the state capital there are 27 state and 14 urban high schools with around 1.6 million inhabitants. The Aschheim high school alone will cost a little more than 71 million euros and be designed for around 1,000 students.

For the school association – and above all for the three participating municipalities – the construction of the new school campus will be a financial feat, after all, the new construction of the Kirchheimer Gymnasium is currently being built at the same time, which will cost more than 90 million euros. It goes without saying that the three municipalities do not have to shoulder the costs alone; in the case of new buildings, the district as the actual material costs provider has a financial responsibility. In addition, the municipalities can prepare for generous funding from the federal government and the Free State. How high these will be exactly cannot be foreseen, said Michèle Schlautmann, managing director of the association.
The cost distribution between the municipalities and the rural districts used in the presentation was deliberately chosen without funding commitments in order to make the dimensions clear to the municipal councils, who still have to agree to the project. “That is the curse of the first number, but it makes more sense to approach it more conservatively and to calculate without funding first,” said Aschheim’s mayor Thomas Glashauser (CSU).
Both the supplementary building of the secondary school (cost: 36.5 million euros), which is to accommodate around 900 students in the future, as well as the grammar school, the sports hall and the school swimming pool will largely be built using wood hybrid construction. The four rectangular new school buildings are staggered from north to south on the area and are each connected to one another by transitions. The final point is the sports hall at the end of the site, in which the triple gymnasium and the swimming pool with its two pools will be integrated.

The teaching pool was particularly important to all three municipalities involved in the planning, although it will cost almost 15 million euros. At a time when pools are being closed in many municipalities, according to Böltl, it is particularly important to him and his mayor colleagues Glashauser and Andreas Janson (UWV) to set an example: “We want our children to learn to swim again.”
That is why the association made a conscious decision to build a teaching pool that cannot be opened for general use. Free capacities should be made available to associations or the adult education center in the east of the district. Both schools – both the Realschule and the Gymnasium – will have their own auditorium in their new buildings, in which events with up to 400 participants will be possible. There will be a common cafeteria for both schools, which the Kirchheimer Gymnasium can also supply.
The new Aschheim high school will be equipped with a so-called learning house concept: In addition to the classic classrooms, there will also be generous learning landscapes for the students – similar to those in the new building of the Ottobrunn high school – in which the students can come together for group work. The secondary school, however, deliberately refrained from this concept, as the traditional concept of classes has already established itself there, as architect and planner Simon Winter said.

The new Ascheimer grammar school is primarily intended to relieve the Kirchheim counterpart, which was founded in 1982 and for which more than 1,500 pupils have been forecast in a few years without additional offers. “The consensus in the district is that we don’t want mega schools,” said Böltl.
