Earthquake in Turkey: satellite photos show the destruction

After the devastating earthquake in the Turkish-Syrian border area, the death toll in both countries has risen to more than 8,700. The respective authorities counted 6,234 dead in Turkey and 2,470 in Syria on Wednesday morning. Everywhere in the affected areas, people spent the second night outdoors in freezing temperatures. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), up to 23 million people in both countries could be affected by the earthquake.

With the new balance sheets from both countries, the total number of fatalities rose to 8704. Since the rescue workers can often only slowly fight their way through the rubble, experts fear a further significant increase in the number of deaths in the coming days. Many people may still have been buried under rubble.

The 7.8 magnitude earthquake shook the Turkish-Syrian border area early Monday morning. Thousands of buildings collapsed. Countless people were injured when their homes collapsed. Satellite images from Maxar show before and after images of the extent of the destruction.
