Earthquake in Indonesia: many dead on the island of Java

According to a media report, at least 44 people died and many were injured in a 5.6-magnitude earthquake on the Indonesian island of Java. A spokesman for the city administration of the most affected city of Cianjur told the AFP news agency: “Hundreds, maybe even thousands of houses were destroyed.” Videos on social media showed collapsed buildings and people crying. Debris lay everywhere on the streets. There is no reliable information about the number of injured.

The earthquake happened on Monday afternoon (local time) near the capital Jakarta on the island of Java. The epicenter was a few kilometers southwest of Cianjur. This is also where the greatest damage occurred.

Quake took place at a depth of ten kilometers

The earthquake was clearly felt in the capital Jakarta, a good 100 kilometers from the epicenter. High-rise buildings swayed, however, no major damage was reported in the metropolis.

According to the US Earthquake Monitor (USGS), the quake took place at a depth of ten kilometers. There was no tsunami warning. The island nation of Indonesia lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the most geologically active zone on earth. Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are common there.

In January last year, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, killing more than 100 people. Thousands of people lost their homes.
