For a long time, no other company was as good at one thing as Tesla: selling electric cars. But the latest business figures presented by the US electric car manufacturer on Wednesday reflect the crisis that most Western car manufacturers now find themselves in. In Europe and the USA, demand for battery-powered vehicles continues to cool. And in China, where the electric car market is still growing rapidly, domestic manufacturers are taking more and more market share from Western companies. Tesla boss Elon Musk’s plan to sell 50 percent more cars every year is no longer working. It may well be that Tesla’s car business will not grow at all this year, or at most will grow slightly.
