Dubai Airshow 2021: arms, jets and billion-dollar deals

Every two years: when the great heat of summer in the Emirates has given way and milder temperatures prevail, the military, aviation managers and arms lobbyists meet for the Dubai Airshow in November.

The Dubai Airshow is not held at Dubai International Airport with the abbreviation DXB, where the Emirates airline maintains its traffic hub, but at Dubai-World Central International (DWC) Airport, which is located further south on the border with Abu Dhabi and is mostly used by cargo planes.

This trade fair is only open to those who have registered in advance and who adhere to the “dress code”. This year there are 160 commercial, military aircraft and private jets on the apron and a lot of military and civilian equipment in the more than 20 pavilions of 1200 exhibitors.

Within the first few days, Airbus recorded orders of several billion euros. The US company Indigo Partners ordered 255 Airbus jets from the A321neo family for its low-cost flight holdings in Wizz Air in Hungary, Frontier in the USA, Volaris in Mexico and Jetsmart in South America.

Airbus enters the cargo aircraft market

One of the largest leasing companies, the Air Lease Corporation (ALC) from Los Angeles, has ordered 111 aircraft from the Europeans, including for the first time the Airbus A350 as a cargo version, which is scheduled to fly from 2025.

The Dubai Air Show, which will take place from November 14 to 18, 2021, is primarily a male-dominated trade fair – female trade visitors are the exception.
