Most Europeans could see with their own eyes that this summer was special. In the heat, asphalt roads melted and railroad tracks buckled. Forests were on fire over such a large area like at no time since records began in 2006. And dried-up rivers revealed shipwrecks from the Second World War and so-called hunger stones, on which the lowest water levels from previous centuries are marked.
