According to Sergei Sobyanin, the authorities evacuated the inhabitants of two residential buildings in Moscow, damaged by the drones. They “will be able to return to their apartments as soon as the special services have finished their work,” said the mayor of the Russian capital. He also announced that two people had been slightly injured. “All the city’s emergency services are on site. […] No one has been seriously injured so far,” he said on his Telegram channel.

Why so little damage?

For his part, the governor of the Moscow region, Andrey Vorobyov, indicated that several drones had been shot down near the capital. “This morning, residents of some districts of the Moscow region could hear the sound of explosions, it was our air defense system,” he wrote. He called on residents to “keep their cool” and assured that “all the emergency services are doing their job. »

The Kremlin also indicated that Vladimir Putin had been kept informed “live” of the drone attack and wanted to reassure the population by saying that there were “no threats”.

Rare attacks in Russia

The Russian Investigative Committee, responsible for the main investigations in the country, said in a statement that it was investigating the events. Moscow and its region, located more than 500 km from the Ukrainian border, have so far been very rarely targeted by drone attacks since the start of the conflict, even if this type of attack has multiplied elsewhere in Russia. In early May, two drones were shot down over the Kremlin, the seat of Russian power, in an attack blamed on Ukraine.

Other attacks have nevertheless multiplied in recent weeks on Russian soil, with in particular a spectacular incursion last week in the Belgorod region, bordering Ukraine.
