Driving climate-friendly: the number of used e-cars is increasing

There are more and more used electric cars, but they are still relatively rare. That could change in the coming years, however. The used Stromer are already popular.

The supply of used electric cars has doubled within a year. But unlike on the new car market, e-cars are still exotic among used cars, as figures from the Mobile.de vehicle exchange and the Federal Motor Transport Authority show.

An average of 25,500 used purely electric cars were advertised on Mobile.de in January, according to an evaluation by the company for the dpa news agency. That was a 106 percent increase from January 2022.

Only 2.4 percent e-cars

But even after doubling, used electric cars accounted for only 2.4 percent of the supply. And for the actual transfers of ownership counted by the Federal Motor Transport Authority, it was only one percent in January. In the case of new cars, the proportion of electric vehicles was recently ten times as high.

The reason for this is that the increase in new registrations of electric cars in recent years has not yet arrived on the used car market. However, that could change in the next two years.

An average of 38 idle days for e-cars

“There will probably be a larger supply of used electric cars from 2024 or 2025,” says the Vice President of the Central Association of the German Motor Trade, Thomas Peckruhn. Then many leasing returns from the last few years will come onto the market. If you want more choice, you have to be patient.

The used Stromer are already popular: they sell relatively quickly on Mobile.de. In January, there was an average of 38 days until an offered car was sold. There were more than 50 each for petrol, diesel and hybrids.
