Driver sentenced for transporting cannabis in a shipment of chips

The driver of a van was sentenced by the criminal court of Perpignan (Pyrénées-Orientales) to 30 months in prison, a customs fine of 438,000 euros and a ban on frequenting French territory for five years.

On February 27, Port-Vendres customs officers discovered 250 kg of herbal cannabis in this truck coming from Spain, hidden in the middle of a load of crisps.

It was the customs officers’ narcotics detection dog that stopped, in front of the loading of the van. It was not the crisps that attracted him, but rather the boxes, hidden behind the aperitif cakes: 34 boxes, containing herbal cannabis, representing a value of 438,550 euros on the illicit narcotics market.
