On the penultimate day of his life, Eduardo Tirella flew to Rhode Island. The woman who picked him up there on October 6, 1966 was called Doris Duke. She was the richest woman in America.

Together they drove to Rough Point, to Duke’s four-acre estate on Bellevue Avenue in Newport, the glamorous vacation spot of the American moneyed gentry.

Eddie, as Tirella was known to friends, had recently announced that he was ending his professional relationship with Doris Duke after a decade curating and designing her homes from Honolulu to New Jersey.

He just had to tell her that.
