Not even at the height of the Cold War was humanity as close to self-destruction as it is today. This is the verdict of the scientists behind the “Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists”, who have just set their symbolic doomsday clock to 90 seconds to midnight – closer to global catastrophe than ever before. Contradicting this dictum is difficult in view of the evidence: Russia’s invasion undermines all international norms and disarmament efforts of the past decades. The danger that the conflict will continue to escalate to the point of the use of nuclear weapons cannot be dismissed out of hand. In the background, climate change is in full swing, and the corona pandemic has not survived in many places.
