Donations are likely to fall in 2023 after an increase in 2022

A temporary improvement? Donations from the French increased in 2022, after two years of decline, but the impact of inflation is likely to weigh in 2023, according to the Ipsos barometer for the Apprentis d’Auteuil foundation released Thursday. According to the fourth edition of this barometer, one French person in two (50%) declares having given in 2022, i.e. almost the level of 2019 (51%), after two years of “limited” decline in 2020 and 2021, where a floor of 48% had been reached.

The average amount of donations is 333 euros per donor, up 21.5% over one year (274 euros in 2021). The proportion of young people aged 18-34 who donated in 2022 (55%) is similar to that of seniors aged 65 and over (56%).

Lower amounts

Reason for concern for associations, the amounts of donations are likely to fall: nearly four out of ten donors (39%) intend to give a lower amount in 2023, a drop justified above all by the reduction in purchasing power (for 57% of them) and price increases (41%). The donors surveyed plan to give to 2.1 causes in 2023, a figure down from previous barometers: 2.4 causes in 2022 and 2.7 in 2021.

The trifecta of causes mobilizing the most donations remains health and medical research (38%, -5 points), aid to the most disadvantaged (32%, -7 points) and animal defense (25%, +4 points).

For this barometer, Ipsos has renewed the study system set up in 2020, 2021 and 2022 on the basis of a representative sample of the French population of 1,000 people, questioned from February 23 to March 14, 2023 by Internet.
