Dominican one-legged athlete Wagner Astacio impresses in high jump

There has been no shortage of images of incredible performances since the start of these 2024 Paralympic Games, notably with Archers Sheetal Devi and Matt Stutzmanborn without arms, who distinguished themselves on Sunday by shooting with their feet and mouth. The Stade de France crowd was in turn won over on Tuesday evening in athletics by a Dominican athlete, during the high jump final of the T63/T42 category (amputation or similar amputation of lower limbs).

Wagner Astacio (20 years old) launched into a run-up on one leg, having lost most of his left leg. He made six jumps before clearing the 1.81 m bar on his second attempt with a fascinating technique in a ventral roll. Wagner Astacio finally obtained 5th place in this final after clearing a final bar at 1.85 m, which is the best performance of his season.

With an atrophied leg, Cameroonian Yves-Noé Batifi Loumou broke the African record (1.77 m) during an event won by American Ezra Frech (1.94 m and a blade/prosthesis), while Indians Sharad Kumar (1.88 m) and Mariyappan Thangavelu (1.85 m) completed the podium.
