Vettel: 2023 not a replacement driver either
Sebastian Vettel is retiring as a regular Formula 1 driver. That has been a fact for months. Now the four-time world champion has indicated that he will not be active in another driving role in the Grand Prix scene in 2023.
Being a reserve driver doesn’t appeal to him, says Vettel before the Grand Prix in Austin. That’s “probably out of the question” for him, says the Aston Martin driver. His complete statements about his future can be found here!
Formula 1 technology: The new front wing on the Mercedes
We already talked about some updates during today’s ticker. Our technical experts have already carried out an initial analysis of the new Mercedes front wing.
Alonso: Didn’t even see the crane
And another exciting statement from the Spaniard about the crane incident in Suzuka. He reveals: “I didn’t see the crane at all.” So it was just luck that there was no accident.
“I only saw Carlos’ car on the second lap,” he reports, explaining that the TV didn’t give you an impression of how bad the visibility in the car really was.
It’s difficult to describe “how little we see,” emphasizes Alonso. In any case, he himself only noticed afterwards that there was a crane on the route at all – although he drove right past it!

Vettel: Need better tires
Of course, the crane on the track in Suzuka was another topic today. Sebastian Vettel says: “We drive at safety car speed and there is a limit to how fast we can drive.”
“But we are forced to drive as fast as allowed to keep the tires in the ideal working window. That’s a problem, even when the flag is green,” explains the four-time world champion.
He clarifies: “There shouldn’t be any incentive for us to push in these conditions if there’s a yellow flag or a safety car to keep the tire temperatures under control.”
Hence his demand: “We need tires that heat up faster under these conditions.” He also reports that the drivers are in dialogue with the FIA about the incident.
“I hope that they will give an update on where they are in terms of the investigation. Those were definitely not great circumstances. That must be avoided at all costs in the future,” Vettel clarifies.
