“King Otto” was considered a blatant outsider. A documentary tells the story of the rise of football legend Otto Rehagel.

By winning the European Championship in 2004, Greece wrote football history: Who would have trusted the blatant outsider to reach the finals of the tournament in Portugal at all? Probably nobody.

The architect of the success was a German, to whom they then built a monument in Greece: Otto Rehhagel. More than 17 years after the long-time Bundesliga coach’s greatest triumph, a documentary about the sensational coup is now coming to the cinemas.

“King Otto” traces the 83-year-old’s path from the national coach, initially viewed with skepticism, to becoming a coach at Olympus. Rehhagel himself gives an insight into his world of emotions and thoughts at the time and reveals why he did not want to train the German team after the success.

King Otto, theatrical release already on November 10th, Greece, USA, Great Britain 2021, 82 min., By Christopher André Marks, with Otto Rehhagel, Ioannis Topalidis, Traianos Dellas and others
