How long do people stand in traffic jams on the roads in the district of Munich? How often do you use the S-Bahn or U-Bahn to go to work or to go shopping. Or is the bicycle now the most popular means of transport? A household survey in the district of Munich, which is part of a large-scale survey in more than 500 cities, municipalities and districts throughout Germany and has been running since the beginning of the year, is intended to clarify these questions, among others. According to the district office, the results of the survey should form the basis “for mobility planning tailored to the needs of the population” and be incorporated specifically into the local transport planning of the district of Munich.
The survey is organized by the Technical University of Dresden and is part of the research project “Mobility in Cities – SrV 2023”. People from all parts of the population are interviewed, the addresses were determined at random from the population register. Each selected household receives a letter of notification, participation is voluntary and the evaluation is completely anonymous, assures the district office. The information from more than 270,000 people is to be evaluated throughout Germany in order to generate the broadest possible picture of mobility behavior.
It is primarily about which means of transport are mainly used and what distances are covered. But it is also asked whether someone has a driver’s license, how far away the nearest public transport stops are and how long commuters travel. The use of car sharing offers or electric bicycles, for example, is also analyzed.
District Administrator Christoph Göbel (CSU) asks the selected households to participate actively: “Each household represents part of the entire population and is therefore needed.” Representative data, which is essential for needs-based traffic planning, can only be determined through active participation. Even people who rarely travel are expressly encouraged to participate. The survey will run until the end of the year, after which the data will be evaluated.
