District of Munich – handball boom in the diaspora – District of Munich

from

Stefan Galler and Martin Mühlfenzl, Graefelfing/Ismaning

The strongholds are in the north: There, indoor handball is most popular in Germany, in Flensburg and Kiel the sport even outperforms football. In comparison, Bavaria is diaspora; Clubs are rare, especially in the higher leagues. But something is happening – and not just or because of the current Handball World Cup: In the greater Munich area, the men of TuS Fürstenfeldbruck have temporarily set accents in the second division, for women, HCD Gröbenzell and HSG Würm-Mitte mix in the third division with. In addition to the HSG from Gräfelfing, there are also a number of other ambitious handball clubs in the Munich district that have large youth departments and successful senior teams: for example HT Munich, a merger of the departments of TSV Unterhaching and SV-DJK Taufkirchen, or TSV Ismaning .
