It is primarily for historical reasons that the Munich District Office is hardly represented in its own district, but still has its headquarters in the state capital today. The district has its roots in the decree of Maximilian II issued in 1862 to separate jurisdiction and administration in the Kingdom of Bavaria. At that time, two district offices were created for the Munich area, one to the left of the Isar and the other to the right of the Isar – with their main offices on Dachauer Strasse and Lilienberg. The district office was housed in the historic building on Lilienberg until 1956, before it moved to its current main location on Mariahilfplatz in der Au.
With the opening of his new branch in Messestadt Riem, District Administrator Christoph Göbel (CSU) and his authorities are making it clear that they want to continue to maintain the central orientation of the house in the state capital. However, the district will massively reduce the number of locations in Munich, which have grown massively over the past decades – for cost reasons and due to a rapidly changing world of work.
The branch offices on Orleansplatz near the Ostbahnhof and on Nockherstrasse have already been closed, and the leases there end at the end of May. By 2028, the branches on Frankenthaler Strasse, Ludmillastrasse and Nockherstrasse will also be gradually cleared when the leases there expire. The rented building on Bretonischer Ring and that on Hochacker in Grasbrunn are also up for grabs. The district wants to reduce rental costs from currently almost three million euros a year. He owns the building complex on Mariahilfplatz, the buildings on Ohlmüllerstrasse and Chiemgaustrasse, the vehicle registration office in Grasbrunn – and now also the Karree in Riem.
Despite the growing number of employees, the authority needs less space. Around 1,300 of the 1,600 employees are technically able to work from their home office or on the move – and around 600 use this opportunity on a daily basis. Before Corona there were only around 100 – at the peak of the pandemic more than 800.
