They are involved in hospice work or neighborhood help, support people in need or children with school problems, care for the elderly or are committed to the preservation of culturally and historically significant buildings: the range of voluntary commitments in the district of Munich is diverse. Four institutions and 14 individuals have now been honored for their services by District Administrator Christoph Göbel (CSU) in Garching. They received the honorary certificate and the district’s gold badge of honour.
Three of the four honored institutions are involved in the social sector: The Garching Disability Advisory Board has been committed to the interests of people with disabilities since 2011 and advises the city. The “Hand in Hand” association from Haar has been organizing a purely voluntary neighborhood network in the community since 2012. And the neighborhood help in Unterschleißheim has developed into a service provider in the social sector over the past 50 years. In addition, the Association of Friends of the St. James Chapel in Hochmutting, which has been taking care of the renovation of the church in the community of Oberschleißheim since 2002, was honored.
Klaus Schmalisch, who received an award for his work in the Baierbrunn Home Care Association, is also involved in the cultural sector. Andrea Hegering has been active in many Garching clubs and organizations since 1987, including the Catholic parish of St. Severin. In Höhenkirchen-Siegertsbrunn, Elisabeth Oehlen was involved in the asylum working group and at Caritas, among other things.

Three honorees come from Kirchheim: Raiza Adam-Schlundt is also involved in refugee aid and neighborhood aid there, Waltraud Aßbeck and Ilse Pirzer are active in the hospice association, among other things. Kurt and Monika Stiegler are both involved in the Pullach Neighborhood Aid, Monika Stiegler is also involved in the partnership with the French community of Pauillac.
In Taufkirchen, Michael Mrva is involved in helping the local community, and Ingeborg Schröder is committed to helping the disabled and the elderly. Rudolf Strauch and Hannelore Emontz-Meister were both honored for their voluntary work in the Feringahaus senior citizens’ meeting center in Unterföhring, Stefanie Kraus for her services to the fundraising campaigns of mothers against nuclear power for children in the Chernobyl area in the Ukraine.
“This commitment is the glue that holds our society together,” said District Administrator Göbel, according to a press release from the district office at the ceremony in Garching’s community center. The Mayor of Garching, Dietmar Gruchmann (SPD), called on the honorees: “Stay true to volunteering!”
