Dispute over the Franconian Passion Play: “Peace in the Village” – Bavaria

In a few days, the suffering and death of Christ will be performed again in Sömmersdorf in Lower Franconia – a long tradition, a huge effort, a big message. But there is a dispute in the town about the noise – even going to court.

The Franconian Passion Play is due to begin in Sömmersdorf on Sunday. And anyone who drops by Hall 1 of the Würzburg Administrative Court on this Tuesday might think that the village has postponed its rehearsal. The protagonists are negotiating in the front, while in the back numerous people are watching the play in uniform shirts with the inscription: “Team Passion. One story – one village – one passion.” A quick spot check of the audience in the hall: Excuse me, are you also taking part in the premiere? “I’m playing Jesus,” says the man with the well-groomed beard and short braid.
