All Internet users have already seen her little Machiavellian smile on social networks… Zoe Roth, granddaughter of the famous “Disaster Girl” meme, now aged 21, sold her photo for more than $ 495,000 in NFT (tokens not fungible), during an auction.
According to the site Know Your Meme, the snapshot was taken in 2005, when Zoe Roth was only 4 years old. Her family had accompanied her to watch the firefighters extinguish a fire intentionally started for a drill in Mebane, North Carolina (United States). Her father Dave Roth then took a picture of his daughter, with an almost Machiavellian smile, in front of the burning house.
The cliché, “baptized Disaster Girl”, was then picked up by online media, and has been the subject of many diversions which have made it today one of the most widespread memes on social networks.
The photo sold in the form of NFT
More than ten years after its publication, the photograph was therefore auctioned as NFT (non fungible token), these non-fungible and forgery-proof tokens that the whole world has been snapping up for a few weeks. If Zoe Ruth still retains the copyright to her meme thanks to a certificate of authenticity stored on the blockchain, the sale will have allowed her to pocket 180 Ether, a cryptocurrency, valued at nearly one half a million dollars.
Asked by Raleigh News & Observer, Zoe Ruth explained that she plans to share the money with her family, but also to donate to nonprofits.
