After the death of a camerawoman on the set of the film “Rust”, actor Alec Baldwin gave an interview for the first time. A first trailer of the conversation brings numerous new questions to light.
On October 21, a shot went off on the set of the western “Rust” that tore camerawoman Halyna Hutchins (1979-2021) from her life. Leading actor Alec Baldwin had used the gun for a scene during the rehearsal.
The Hollywood star has now given his first TV interview about the accident. In “Alec Baldwin: Unscripted” the 63-year-old speaks to presenter George Stephanopoulos on the US broadcaster ABC and describes his point of view.
The one-hour interview should be broadcast on Thursday evening (local time). The station published just under two minutes from the conversation on Wednesday, in which Baldwin also bursts into tears. The trailer brings numerous new questions to light.
Why did the shot go off?
Baldwin claims in it: “The trigger was not pulled. I didn’t pull the trigger. I would never have pointed a gun at you and pulled the trigger.”
Stephanopoulos then wants to know in the clip how a real cartridge got onto the film set. Baldwin’s answer: “I have no clue. Someone has put a live cartridge into a weapon. A cartridge that shouldn’t have been on the premises.”
In the excerpt published in advance, Baldwin is very emotional. “Even now I find it hard to believe,” he says with tears in his eyes. “When I think back, I think, ‘What could I have done?”
While shooting at a film ranch in Santa Fe in New Mexico, director Joel Souza was also hit on the shoulder. The ongoing investigation revealed that there was a real bullet in the Colt. The police are currently investigating how this could happen. Baldwin had been sued several times after the incident.
