Cup sensation in St. Pauli: FC from Hamburger Kiez threw Borussia Dortmund out of the DFB Cup and is in the quarter-finals.
Etienne Amenyido gave the Bundesliga 2 leaders an early lead, and shortly before the break Axel Witsel put the ball into his own goal to make it 2-0 for FC St. Pauli. After about 20 minutes of play, the guests gained significantly more possession of the ball, St. Pauli mainly waited for counterattacks, remained extremely concentrated in the game against the ball even without captain Philipp Ziereis, who was banished to the reserve bench.
This was particularly impressive shortly before the break: After a powerful attack by Guido Burgstaller on the right lane, Amneyido was again ready to shoot in front of BVB keeper Gregor Kobel, but it was Axel Witsel who stretched his leg and unhappily got into his own net directed.
No changes after the break
Without any personnel changes, both Schultz and his opponent Marco Rose sent their teams into the second half of the game. But Dortmund stayed on the trigger. Haaland (60th), who was almost invisible in the first half, missed with a powerful shot. Ten minutes later it was Leart Paqarada who saved Haaland at the last moment. Dortmund worked and struggled, St. Pauli defended to the point of exhaustion – and even beyond that for some players. That was rewarded, the Hamburgers are with the second team in the cup quarterfinals, which will be held on March 1st and 2nd.
Rose: “Didn’t act like a defending champion.”
“We didn’t start this cup evening the way you go into a cup evening,” said a dismayed Dortmund coach Rose of Sportschau, “that was a little headless here and there in the first half. But we didn’t appear like the defending champions here . That was a bit stupid.”
