Frankfurt turns Hessenderby – SC Freiburg with late goals into the quarterfinals

The next winners have been determined in the DFB Cup round of 16, which was stretched over four match days: SC Freiburg beat second division team SV Sandhausen and the Bundesliga team also dominated in the Hessen derby between Eintracht Frankfurt and SV Darmstadt.

Eintracht Frankfurt is the sixth Bundesliga club to reach the quarter-finals of the cup. In a fast-paced Hessen derby, Eintracht prevailed 4-2 (2-2) against second division leaders SV Darmstadt 98. In front of 49,500 spectators in the sold-out Frankfurt Arena, Randal Kolo Muani (6th/90th minute), Rafael Borré (44th) and Daichi Kamada (62nd) scored the goals for the Bundesliga side twice. Mathias Honsak (29th/31st) scored for the guests.

Joker Petersen decides in the 94th minute

SC Freiburg is the fifth Bundesliga club to reach the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup. Coach Christian Streich’s team won 2-0 (0-0) at second division club SV Sandhausen in the round of 16. Hamadi al Ghaddioui with an own goal in the 87th minute and Freiburg’s joker Nils Petersen (90+4) ended Sandhausen’s dream of a surprise in front of 11,782 spectators.

With VfB Stuttgart, RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich and Union Berlin, four other first division clubs are already in the quarter-finals.

The last round of 16 games will take place on Wednesday. VfL Bochum then welcomes Borussia Dortmund to the Ruhr derby, second division club 1. FC Nürnberg meets league rival Fortuna Düsseldorf.
