Borussia Dortmund wins the Revierderby – Nuremberg is the only second division team in the quarter-finals

In the DFB Cup round of 16, which was stretched over four match days, the last winners have been determined: Borussia Dortmund and 1. FC Nürnberg move into the quarterfinals.
BVB victorious in the district derby against Bochum
Borussia Dortmund is the last team to reach the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup. The 2-1 (1-0) win in the derby at VfL Bochum paved the way to the last eight teams, which BVB missed out on last year. In front of 26,000 spectators in the sold-out Vonovia Ruhrstadion, Emre Can (45 + 1) with a curious goal from around 45 meters and Marco Reus (70) ensured the hard-fought victory of the third player in the Bundesliga in a duel with the fourth from last. Kevin Stöger (64th penalty) scored the equalizer for Bochum.

After a thrilling penalty shootout against Fortuna Düsseldorf, 1. FC Nürnberg is the only second division team in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup out of all the Bundesliga clubs. The Franconians won 5-3 on penalties in the round of 16. After 120 minutes it was 1-1 (1-1, 0-1). In the penalty shootout, Nuremberg goalkeeper Peter Vindahl was able to parry Jona Niemiec’s attempt. Then Eric Shuranov converted the last shot from the point for the lucky hosts. In addition to the rich bonus of around 1.7 million euros for progressing, Nuremberg can hope for an attractive draw in the round of the last eight teams.

Eintracht Frankfurt is the sixth Bundesliga club to reach the quarter-finals of the cup. In a fast-paced Hessen derby, Eintracht prevailed 4-2 (2-2) against second division leaders SV Darmstadt 98. In front of 49,500 spectators in the sold-out Frankfurt Arena, Randal Kolo Muani (6th/90th minute), Rafael Borré (44th) and Daichi Kamada (62nd) scored the goals for the Bundesliga side twice. Mathias Honsak (29th/31st) scored for the guests.

SC Freiburg is the fifth Bundesliga club to reach the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup. Coach Christian Streich’s team won 2-0 (0-0) at second division club SV Sandhausen in the round of 16. Hamadi al Ghaddioui with an own goal in the 87th minute and Freiburg’s joker Nils Petersen (90+4) ended Sandhausen’s dream of a surprise in front of 11,782 spectators.
With VfB Stuttgart, RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich and Union Berlin, four other first division clubs are already in the quarter-finals.
