Knowing your color type can help avoid fashion faux pas. This is how you determine which shades go well with you.

The theory of color types goes back to the Swiss painter and art teacher Johannes Itten. Based on skin tone, eye color, and hair color, he made specific color charts for clothing, makeup, and interior design. A distinction is made between four color types that are based on the seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. An overview:

The spring guy

The spring type belongs to the warm-toned color types, is rather light, with a warm, golden-rosy skin tone and light hair color with golden to reddish reflections. The complexion is delicate and hardly ever tans, the eye color is mostly light. Clear, warm colors such as lime green, champagne, turquoise, apricot or poppy red suit the spring type particularly well. The spring type should avoid muted, dark tones such as black or colors with a cool, bluish nuance.

The fall type

The autumn type is also warm-toned, but is usually a bit darker than the spring type. He is characterized by a golden-yellow complexion. The hair is auburn, red or brown with a golden sheen or a honey hue. The autumn type tans rather slowly, freckles can occur. The autumn type has green or brown eyes. Colors such as rust, copper or chestnut red, olive green, fir green, shades of brown, mustard yellow or petrol blue harmonize well with the autumnal type. The autumn type should avoid cold and bright nuances such as pink, lemon yellow or cool shades of blue.

The summer guy

The summer type is rather pale and has a cool, bluish-rosy skin tone. Hair is usually light brown or blond with ashy accents, eyes are usually teal, blue, or gray. Bordeaux red and all shades of blue as well as delicate pastel shades such as green, pink, lavender or yellow look good on the summer type. Loud and intense colors such as bright green or bright blue, yellowish nuances and pure white make the summer type look rather bland.

The winter guy

Those who belong to the winter type have a cool, bluish or olive skin tone. Hair and eye color range from very light to very dark. Cool, contrasting and bright colors such as black, white, magenta, crimson, cherry red, emerald green, lemon yellow, royal blue and neon colors harmonize very well here. Washed-out pastel tones, brown-beige tones and very warm colors are not really for the winter type.

This is how you determine the individual color type

To determine your own color type, you should first look at your skin tone. If the complexion seems more pink, red or bluish-pink, you belong to the cold types, while golden-yellow and orange tones indicate a warm type.

If you are unsure about your skin tone, the color of the veins can help: bluish-purple is an indication of cold color types, greenish veins of warm ones. Another indication is the color of the shadows under the eyes: bluish indicates the cool type, brownish the warm type. A brownish to rosy-pink lip color is an indication of the warm type, while the cool type has more of a bluish lip color.

Standing shirtless in front of a mirror in natural light can also help with identification. Then alternately hold a pink and an orange piece of fabric to your face: if the face appears fresher with orange, you are a warm type, if pink flatters your complexion more, you are a cool type.
