Department of Defense: The ejection seat in the cabinet

The Ministry of Defense is one of the most sensitive posts in the federal government. Since the ministry was founded in 1955, there have been 19 heads of department, and the average tenure was just over three and a half years. In many cases, the ministry was not a springboard for further careers, but rather an ejection seat.
