The Alpha variant is in the process of being replaced by the Delta variant in Europe. The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) estimated on Wednesday that the Delta should account for 90% of new Covid-19 cases in the European Union by the end of August.
While the Alpha variant detected in the United Kingdom currently remains predominant in the region, models from the European agency predict that the Delta variant, initially detected in India and particularly contagious, will account for 70% of new infections in the EU by the start. August and 90% by the end of August, the center said in a note.
