The world of series loses one of its pioneers! Cuban screenwriter Delia Fiallo, considered “the mother of telenovela” and the source of international successes such as the soap opera Crystal, died on Tuesday in Miami at the age of 96, her stepdaughter, Odalis Baez, confirmed.
Pioneer of this kind of ultra-popular romantic soap operas in Latin America, Delia Fiallo, whose career began in the middle of the last century, said in an interview with AFP in 2018 that she wanted to be remembered ” like a person who loved a lot and who was very loved ”.
Debut in radio soap operas
Crowned “mother of the telenovela” by her fans, Delia Fiallo left her mark on Spanish-American popular culture in the second half of the 20th century.
She had started her career in 1950 with radio soap operas, before writing her first television screenplay in 1957.
Delia Fiallo then worked with Venezuelan TV channels after leaving the Cuban Communist regime for Miami in 1966, including Lucecita in 1967, or worldwide success like Esmeralda, Leonela, Cristal and Kassandra.
