With nine championship titles, Don Jackson is the most successful coach in the German Ice Hockey League. Now he says goodbye emotionally in Munich. His likely successor is no stranger.

Don Jackson leaves the German ice hockey champions EHC Red Bull Munich and ends his successful career as a coach. Jackson and EHC manager Christian Winkler announced the expected personnel decision on Friday – five days after Munich won the title in the German Ice Hockey League.

“It was a simple decision for me, but an emotional one,” Jackson said, thanking his family for their support. “I knew the time was right for this decision.”

A total of nine championship titles

With nine championship titles, Jackson is the most successful coach in DEL history. Almost 20 years ago, the 66-year-old made a name for himself as a coach in Germany with the Düsseldorfer EG. He won five championship titles from 2008 with the Eisbären Berlin – four more followed later with the Munich team. Overall, Jackson completed 1072 DEL games as a coach.

Jackson gives up his coaching post, but remains with the Red Bull group. “We are an organization with many coaches. Don will take all the coaches by the hand and pass on his experience,” said Winkler.

Successor found

According to reports, the EHC manager has long since found a successor for Jackson. According to media reports, the former national coach Toni Söderholm is to inherit the Americans in the coming season. Nothing was official on Friday. “I think today is the day that should be all about Don Jackson,” Winkler said.

However, the Söderholm solution seems likely. The 45-year-old Finn has already ended his engagement at SC Bern, for which he left the German Ice Hockey Federation head over heels last November, after disappointing months.
