What is a diatomite mat?

Diatomite mat is a bath mat made from diatomaceous earth. This sedimentary sedimentary rock is composed of microscopic fossils of algae called diatoms, from which it gets its name.

Diatomaceous earth is known for its absorbent properties: very porous, it can absorb several times its weight in water. This ability to absorb humidity gives it natural antibacterial properties: deprived of humidity, bacteria and mold cannot spread. The diatomite mat therefore helps maintain a cleaner and healthier bathroom environment.

diatomite mats are mainly made of diatomite, of course… but not 100%! Diatomaceous earth is combined with fibers, binders, and possibly antibacterial additives and pigments to improve the functional properties of the carpet and its aesthetics. It is therefore always interesting to pay attention to the precise composition of your carpet.

Organic models are in fact biodegradable, making them a more ecological option than synthetic bath mats.

Although it has many advantages, diatomite also presents some vulnerabilities. Your carpet can actually be damaged in the event of an impact: it is therefore advisable to walk on it barefoot only, and to avoid dropping objects on it. It is also recommended to avoid any projection of fatty products, which can clog it.

How much should you budget for a diatomite mat?

The average price of a diatomite bath mat varies depending on the brand, size, and specific features. In general, prices are between 30 and 60 euros.

How to maintain diatomite mat?

Diatomite carpet is easy to live with. On a daily basis, just make sure it air dries. Normally it dries very quickly. However, diatomite does not like being submerged: in the event of the bathtub overflowing or excessive splashing, it is recommended to hang your mat vertically to promote drying. This precaution will prevent your carpet from becoming deformed!

Attention : Avoid prolonged direct exposure to the sun, as this could cause cracking.

To preserve your carpet for the long term, opt for weekly washing, simply running it under clean water and possibly rubbing with a soft brush in case of encrusted dirt. For deep cleaning, avoid traditional household products. Instead, choose a mixture of equal parts water and household vinegar. Apply and leave for a few minutes before rinsing with clean water and leaving to air dry.

If the surface of the carpet becomes dirty despite regular cleaning, or if there are stubborn marks, you can lightly sand the surface using fine sandpaper.

Good to know : It is not recommended to immerse the diatomite mat in water, as immersion risks saturating it, which reduces its absorption capacity in the short term. Machine washing is therefore excluded!
