The storm “Daniel” left its mark on Wednesday and Thursday night in northern Germany. The police and fire brigade had to move out in many places because trees and branches had fallen on the streets. A man died in his car.
For the night, the German Meteorological Service had predicted gusts of wind with wind speeds of up to 115 kilometers per hour (wind force 11). The last thing that was lifted in the morning was the storm warning for the Baltic coast. In Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony, the wind led to numerous fire and police operations. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, snow also fell and resulted in slippery roads.

A driver was killed in an accident with a fallen tree on the B4 near Wesendorf (Gifhorn district). Hundreds of assignments in Schleswig-Holstein
In Schleswig-Holstein, the control centers counted around 250 operations in the evening and at night. Branches and whole trees fell on houses and streets. Especially in the south of the country, the fire brigade and police had to move out due to the weather. There were therefore no injuries. On the A1 between Bad Oldesloe (Stormarn district) and the Bargteheide motorway junction, the vehicle still has to be recovered after a truck accident. Due to the strong wind, this was not possible on Wednesday evening. The rescue will be postponed to Thursday morning, it said. Nobody was injured in the accident.
Hamburg: Cathedral ended earlier
In Hamburg the strong gusts of wind led to around 200 fire brigade operations. Among other things, according to NDR 90.3 trees fell on the tracks, so that the train traffic on the lines U3, U1 and S3 was interrupted. Due to the strong wind, visitors to the cathedral were also sent home earlier. Several streets were flooded, branches fell on sidewalks and power lines. In addition, the fish market was under water. Nobody got hurt.
Ice accidents in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania
The storm also caused some damage in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. At least 150 trees fell, as NDR 1 Radio MV reported. In Minzow near Röbel a tree fell on a fire engine during an operation. In Ludwiglust, scaffolding partially collapsed. There was also snow and slippery terrain in the northeast. Dozens of cars came off the road as a result, especially in West Mecklenburg and around Rostock. There were no injuries.
Ferry traffic partially impaired
In East Frisia, some ferry connections were canceled due to the storm on Wednesday – for example on the lines from the mainland to Norderney, Baltrum and Langeoog. The smaller express ferries also had to stay in the ports.
The ferry of the shipping company Cassen Eils has not been calling at Heligoland since Tuesday, but according to the shipping company it should be on the way again from Thursday. The ferries to and from Amrum and Föhr run without restrictions, as reported by the Wyker Dampfschiffs-Reederei.
