Deceleration: Director Christoph Marthaler for his 70th – Culture

When Christoph Marthaler received the International Ibsen Prize in Oslo in 2018, which is something like the Nobel Prize for Theater, he was felt to be more accessible and talkative than ever. In a good mood, as you can be when you have just received a check for 260,000 euros from the Norwegian state, the otherwise shy Swiss director gave an insight into his work during an artist talk – and then performed a furious flute solo. Just like back then, during his student days in Paris, when he attended the theater school of the master mime artist Jacques Lecoq and earned his living as a street musician, with a plastic flute, because notice: “It could rain.”
