He was a pen of the boulevard theatre. Jean-Pierre Grédy died at the age of 101, his relatives announced on Monday at Figaro, without specifying the date of death. “His last thoughts will have been for his family and his friends who have given him a good life”, he writes in the columns of the daily newspaper.
Born in 1920, Jean-Pierre Grédy began his career as a screenwriter after studying literature and law. At the end of the 1940s, he met Pierre Barillet with whom he would form a successful partnership for decades.
Performed on Broadway
In 1948 they wrote the vaudeville Adele’s Gift which has exceeded one thousand performances. Their 1965 play, Forty caratswas played on Broadway by Julie Harris, then by Liv Ullmann in a film adaptation.
Among the pieces by Jean-Pierre Grédy and Pierre Barrillet – who died in 2019 – the best known are Crazy Amandawith Jacqueline Maillan, broadcast on television in At the theater tonight in 1974, as well as Vasewhich François Ozon adapted for the cinema in 2010, with Catherine Deneuve, Fabrice Luchini and Gérard Depardieu in the main roles.
Jean-Pierre Grédy also led a solo career, writing ballets and song lyrics.
