Dead and weakened swallows after persistent rain in Bavaria – Bavaria

The heavy rain in Bavaria over the past few days has affected many swallows. There have been reports of dead and weakened birds, particularly from the east and south, according to the Bavarian State Association for Bird and Nature Conservation (LBV). The swallows are therefore on their way to their winter quarters in Africa in September. The cold in the past few days has robbed them of a lot of energy, which they need for the flight south. When it rains, the birds cannot fly and cannot catch insects for food.

Aid campaigns for weakened swallows were already underway in Munich and Landshut over the weekend, it was said. There were also reports of swallows in distress in the districts of Fürstenfeldbruck, Regensburg, Nürnberger Land, Starnberg and Straubing. It is unclear how many birds in the Free State are affected. The LBV bird rescue center is currently caring for 80 swallows.

According to the LBV, anyone who finds a weakened house martin or barn swallow on the ground can bring it under the roof, dry it off and keep it warm in a dark room. After that, however, it should definitely be taken to a wild bird care center where it can be fed. According to the experts, swallows do not eat normal bird food, but only special food.
