It was a tough fight. But in the end, the German tennis doubles keep their nerves. All that’s missing now is a win.

The German tennis team is only missing one win to qualify for the group stage in the Davis Cup. The doubles Andreas Mies and Tim Pütz won in Trier against the Swiss duo Stan Wawrinka and Dominic Stricker 6:7 (3:7), 6:3, 6:4 and gave the hosts a 2:1 lead.

Olympic champion Alexander Zverev can now make progress with a win in the top individual against Marc-Andrea Hüsler.

After the first day it was 1:1. After Oscar Otte initially lost to Marc-Andrea Hüsler on Friday, Zverev equalized with a convincing win against Wawrinka.

“It was so awesome to play here,” said Mies after the hard-fought victory. “It was a lot of fun. We’re happy that we were able to get a point for the team,” said Pütz.

Mies and Pütz increase after the first set

Mies and Pütz needed a while in front of around 4000 spectators to find their rhythm. Pütz had almost always played with Kevin Krawietz in the Davis Cup in recent years. Krawietz is missing this time because he recently became a father.

After losing the first set, Mies and Pütz improved and made a quick break in the second round. In the deciding set, both doubles gave nothing away, but in the end the German duo kept their nerve and, to the cheers of the spectators and to the delight of Boris Becker on the German bench, completed the victory after 2:17 hours.
