The ARD men didn’t quite trust their own idea. To be on the safe side, they called in a replacement speaker on June 16, 1976 – just in case, as Dagmar Berghoff later said, “that I passed out or couldn’t speak from fright”. Karl-Heinz Köpcke, as “Mister Tagesschau” a member of the West German television aristocracy, apparently had no idea that he was helping the future “Miss Tagesschau” into office that day. At the time, Köpcke feared, Berghoff also reported that, that having a woman as newsreader had opened up several gateways for greater harm.
