Dachau: Showcase in the affluent society – Dachau

What can be seen in the glass showcases of Dachau shops often seems strange: motorcycles in the kitchen shop, Playmobil figures in the jewelry display or bread that slowly – but surely – hardens in the shop window.

Anyone who goes window shopping in France uses the phrase “lécher les vitrines”. Literally translated, this means you lick the shop window: So stand very close to the glass, press your nose flat and then stick your tongue out – a strange idea.

Dachau’s shop windows also have plenty to make you squeeze your nose, especially in the old town. Because the retailers always outdo each other with their creativity. But they often leave many a walker at a loss: A decommissioned motorcycle was placed in the window of a kitchen specialty store, a few months ago it was supposed to bring something rocky into the hodgepodge of cups, plates and tea sets. And in the displays of bakeries in the district you can always see old pretzels, donuts and farmer’s bread that are slowly – but surely – hardening in the shop window. Instead of fulfilling their actual function: namely to fill a stomach. That’s just how it is in an affluent society.

The sales trick goes like this: the little brat wants to play, the mother buys the jewelry

And now there are these Playmobil figures in the display of a jewelery shop next to the former Hörhammer in the old town. The colored construction workers are about 40 centimeters tall, some of them carry hammers, tools and safety helmets, and they look a little helpless – next to the sparkling silver necklaces and earring stands. The sales trick is easily explained: the little brat discovers the oversized figures in the glass case, lures the mother to the shop window, who storms into the shop and buys the chain for a few hundred euros. When asked, the head of the jewelry store explains that, of course, many children are stopping at their display – that’s right. You just wanted an unusual decoration to attract customers. What’s next? She doesn’t know that yet. Maybe Lego towers around the string of pearls or a Barbie house next to the wedding ring?

But that’s all still within reason, as long as energy isn’t wasted senselessly for the advertising effect, as in Dachau-Ost. There, an inflatable pizza baker beckons you to the kebab shop right on the Sudetenlandstraße – day in and day out. No one wants to calculate the energy costs associated with the blower. But who knows what will happen to the inflatable pizza maker if energy costs continue to skyrocket. Maybe then it will finally be a thing of the past.
