The historian Gabriele Hammermann has headed the Dachau concentration camp memorial site since 2009. On the occasion of the 77th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camp by American troops on April 29, 1945, she spoke to the SZ about the culture of remembrance during the Ukraine War and how the memorials had to react to it. Despite all the justified outrage about Putin’s war of aggression and crimes, she pleads not to throw the results of scientific contemporary history research overboard and also against the increasing attacks from the right and right-wing extremists, during corona protests and from the left-liberal milieu in the post-colonial debate to claim.
