Three-time road world champion Peter Sagan will retire from the WorldTour at the end of the season.

The 33-year-old announced on the sidelines of the Vuelta a San Juan in Argentina that he would limit himself to mountain biking next year and that his career would end at the Olympic Games in Paris.

“I always wanted to quit mountain biking because that’s how it all started. It’s important to me to be able to spend time with my son Marlon and not see life from a cyclist’s perspective anymore. It was never my dream, even when I was 40 or 50 years to drive,” Sagan said in a video.

The Slovak started his career in 2011 and has so far notched up 121 victories. From 2015 to 2017 he won the world champion’s rainbow jersey three times in a row and also celebrated victories in the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix.

From 2017 to 2021 Sagan was under contract with the German racing team Bora-hansgrohe. He won the Tour de France green jersey seven times, more than anyone else. He also achieved twelve stage victories in the most important stage race in the world.
