Spring is here, the sun is shining, the rain has stopped. Everyone is happy. All? no For allergy sufferers, the pollen count is an agonizing time. See what flies through the air and when.

Spring time is flowering time. But not everyone is happy about the first blossoming trees. For allergy sufferers, the sometimes agonizing hay fever season begins, which lasts until autumn. During this pollen season, the body reacts to the pollen of grass, grain and early flowering trees. The latter include hazel, alder and birch. Wind and low rain ensure rapid and widespread distribution.

In allergy sufferers, contact leads to cold-like symptoms such as a runny or stuffy nose, strong urge to sneeze, severe itching or burning eyes and skin irritation. The reason: an overreaction of the immune system to the proteins of certain pollen, which the body’s own defense system mistakenly classifies as a danger – and subsequently fights.

However, not everything is buzzing around at the same time. Many allergy-relevant trees flower in spring, i.e. in March and April. A number of grasses, on the other hand, do not have their main bloom until summer, as the above overview shows for selected species throughout the year. The map below, in turn, shows the daily load collected in Germany for the tree and plant species relevant to allergy sufferers.
