Was it for fun or was it an accident? The driver of the car speaks of a wrong maneuver.

He is said to have driven down the Spanish Steps in Rome in a Maserati and damaged one of the most famous sights in the world: now the driver seems to have been found.

The newspapers “Corriere della Sera” and “La Repubblica” quoted the man as saying that he had ranked incorrectly and was ready to take responsibility. A spokesman for the Roman police said on Friday that he could not yet confirm that the man had surrendered. The investigations continued.

According to media reports, the man borrowed the luxury car in Milan and drove it down the steps of the Trinità dei Monti church in the middle of the week. With the help of passers-by, he got down the stairs and drove away, the reports said. At least three steps were damaged, said the police spokesman. The incident was recorded with video cameras.

The staircase by the architect Francesco De Sanctis from the 18th century is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cars have driven down the steps several times. In 2018, a driver lost control of his car, and in 2007 a drunk drove down the baroque staircase. How to better protect the stairs has been discussed for a long time – a road that is not closed to traffic leads past the upper part.
