Irene -Hillen, born in 1948, has made Musikleben one of the most important funding institutions through her commitment to the German Music Foundation. Schulte-Hillen has now died.

The long-standing President and Honorary President of the German Music Foundation Musikleben, Irene Schulte-Hillen, is dead. Schulte-Hillen died in Hamburg on Thursday after a serious illness at the age of 74, the Hamburg-based foundation said, citing the family.

For three decades, the Hamburg native headed the foundation, which has made it its mission to promote top young musicians. She only resigned from her presidency at the end of 2022 and has been honorary president ever since.

Schulte-Hillen, who was born in 1948, has made the foundation one of the most important funding institutions for highly talented young musicians in Germany through her commitment, it was said. Her vision was to accompany her through valuable loan instruments and individual support during her training. The German Musical Instrument Fund, which now has more than 250 outstanding stringed instruments, goes back to her initiative, and the fund is now the heart of the foundation.

“With Irene Schulte-Hillen, musical life in Germany loses a great personality. She has accompanied hundreds of young people on their artistic path, including such exceptional artists as Igor Levit, Cornelius Meister, Nicolas Altstaedt, Veronika Eberle and Viviane Hagner. She will never be forgotten and remain a role model for the foundation,” said the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Manfred Lahnstein, according to the announcement.
