CSU boss Markus Söder has a new favorite word when it comes to opposition to the traffic light coalition in Berlin. But at the party conference in Augsburg, he also wants to get rid of his nagging image – and show that his party is not lacking in ideas.

No, that’s not a space shuttle that landed here, in the parking lot of the Augsburg exhibition center. It’s a sedan, definitely, but the man who’s getting out is still inspired by that meeting he had the other day with astronauts and space explorers. “We were certified this week that we are a space power,” says Markus Söder about space travel in Bavaria. Then he marches on towards the exhibition hall, where the CSU party conference is about to begin. The CSU is also slowly coming back to questions of power, very earthly, in the fall of 2023 there will be state elections. The main question is whether the dominance of this party will continue to crumble.
