CSD in Munich: Queer community is becoming more visible – Munich

Alexander Miklosy would have been happy if he had lived to see that. But, modest as the former district committee chairman of the Isar- and Ludwigsvorstadt from the pink list, who died in December 2018, he would have said something like: “It doesn’t need to be.” Yes, that was necessary. For many years he walked, most recently with Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD), in the front row of the Christopher Street Day (CSD) parade, which can be seen live again this Saturday for the first time after corona-related lockdowns. Now, posthumously, Miklosy has had his own path dedicated directly to the Westermühlbach.

The city also set another sign in view of this year’s two Pride Weeks. Along with Charlotte Knobloch, President of the Jewish Community in Munich and Upper Bavaria, and Thomas Michel, Chairman of the GOC section of the German Alpine Club, Reiter presented the first bench in the colors of the rainbow to be set up in Munich on Jakobsplatz. It bears the dedication “For Diversity, Acceptance and Openness”.

This is also one of the main concerns of the CSD, which starts this Saturday at 12 noon for the first time at Mariahilfplatz in der Au and then leads about four kilometers through the city center. Among other things, it goes via Gärtnerplatz to Sendlinger-Tor-Platz, Oberanger and Rindermarkt, where the pedestrian groups have reached their destination. The vehicles of the political demonstration, which this year has the motto “Less me, more we”, drive a few meters to the old town hall.

Since the beginning in Munich four decades ago, the demonstrators have been concerned with visibly standing up for equal rights and acceptance for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, inter and queer people. There will be information stands throughout the city center on Saturday about the demands of the LGBTIQ community. Because there is an increasing division in society and there is still violence against people in the community, including in Munich, says Thomas Niederbühl, political spokesman and city councilor for the Pink List: “Attacks on the freedom to live and love queer affect us all. ” The CSD lasts until Sunday, July 17th.
