“It’s not easy to tell the truth”, wrote El Periodico last week in one of the last posts on Twitter. And the newspaper itself is the best example of how difficult this actually is, especially in a country like Guatemala: for almost three decades, it uncovered scandals, fraud and crimes. Their journalists wrote about nepotism and bribery up to the very highest circles. well has El Periodico ceased work in mid-May. Not only does a section of the critical press in Central America die with the newspaper, but also a little bit of hope for a more just and democratic Guatemala.
